Schools must share in blame of no accountability!

Wow! read this link about "helping our students"

Our society does not believe in accountability anymore. I am just going to show up at the end of the month to collect my paycheck. That sounds fun. No work and I still get paid. That is what we are teaching.

  1. 'Wow' is right! I understand the idea of re-evaluating how we give students grade and how we assess their work. However, I disagree with the concept of allowing CHEATING!! Why in the world should a student be allowed to keep the grade when they cheat even if they have an alternate consequence? And never having a deadline for an assignment? How are students going to learn to budget time and be responsible for when they are out in the workforce? I read through some of the comments on that story and it doesn't seem like many of them were for this new grading concept. I agree with some comments that brought up the point that not all students are college bound and we need to better serve those students. However, that doesn't mean lowering expectations just so more students will pass easier. And I thought our 'no graded homework policy' was bad! :)

  2. I heard this the other day and had to laugh. Children now days seem NOT to have as many consequences as we had. I did notice on the chart at the bottom, it said some work would not be given points off. Does that mean some would? If so, who makes that decision?

I think I once heard that McKinney had that policy, but I might have heard wrong. Does anyone know their policy?

  3. I just wanted to add that I heard on the news last night that a law maker is trying to make DISD's and other policies like theirs illigal. SO students would get and accurate grade.

  4. I really do hope a statewide policy could be put in place. We do need to start having accountability somewhere. The real world doesn't take late papers, halfway done papers, or laziness.
